charleston

Joe and I just spent a few nights in Charleston celebrating our birthdays. Both of our birthdays are close to Christmas, and instead of doing big presents for each other, we go on a trip. You may remember our April trip to San Francisco. Sometimes it takes a while to actually plan and go on the trip, it doesn't always happen near our birthdays. The first year we did it, we took the trip in September. This is the best we've done - right smack in the middle of our birthdays (Dec. 22 and Jan. 15). And we also stayed closer to home. We needed to travel during my second trimester, this is a slow week at the church, and my mom was home this week so she could take care of Hannah. Everything fell into place and we planned a last minute three nights away.

Neither of us had been to Charleston in years - like '93 or '94. It's a beautiful city. A lot like Savannah but not as good if you ask me (after all, I am a born and bred Savannahian). The downtown district is much smaller making it easy to figure your way around, but doesn't have the beauty of the squares, moss, and live oaks that Savannah does. We went on a carriage tour and were lucky enough to have a very entertaining guide. I find that humor mixed with knowledge makes a great combination and helps me to remember what actually was said. I love architecture and design as you know. Joe loves history (and I'm starting to more and more). So Charleston had much to offer us both.

Unfortunately neither of us have been feeling that well, fighting nasty colds and other things, but fortunately - we could take it easy a little while away from our sweet - but let's face it - demanding child. Thanks to Grandma for babysitting and giving us a few days away. This is most likely the last time we'll have a break before our world gets even busier with the addition of a baby boy.

The best lunch place: Fleet Landing. Great design.

Carriage tour. So glad we did it.

Loved the fractions.

Cafe/Bakery place. Not great service here but I liked the light fixtures.

Another great lunch place: Sermet's Corner. Eclectic and fun. Good food too.

Poogan's Porch. Cute place. I liked the atmosphere and the food was good.
